Professor Robert A. Rhoads
Robert Rhoads is Professor of Higher Education and Organizational Change (HEOC) within the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSEIS) and a Faculty Affiliate of the UCLA Center for Chinese Studies. He also holds the title of Y. C. Tang Chair Professor at Zhejiang University (Hangzhou).
Professor Rhoads received his Ph.D. in higher education from Pennsylvania State University where he also received a master’s degree in sociology. He has a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in student personnel from Slippery Rock University. He is the recipient of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) Dissertation of the Year Award (1994) and the Outstanding Young Scholar Award (1997) and was recognized with the Senior Scholar Award of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) in 2004. He was honored as a Fulbright Scholar to China during the academic year 2010-11 and won both the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Outstanding Publication Award (Division J) and the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) Council for International Higher Education (CIHE) Research Award for his co-authored book Global Citizenship and the University: Advancing Social Life and Relations in an Interdependent World (2011).
Professor Rhoads’ research interests focus on globalization and university reform, the intersection of social movements and university life, and the democratic potential of universities and their key actors.
He is the author or co-author of the following books: China’s Rising Research Universities: A New Era of Global Ambition; Qualitative Research Methods in Ethnic Education: Theory, Strategy, and Exemplars (in Chinese); Global Citizenship and the University: Advancing Social Life and Relations in An Interdependent World; The University, State, and Market: The Political Economy of Globalization in the Americas; Freedom's Web: Student Activism in an Age of Cultural Diversity; Community Service and Higher Learning: Explorations of the Caring Self; Academic Service Learning: A Pedagogy of Action and Reflection; Democracy, Multiculturalism, and the Community College; Community Colleges as Cultural Texts; Coming Out In College: The Struggle for a Queer Identity; Enhancing Promotion, Tenure and Beyond: Faculty Socialization as a Cultural Process; and Cultural Leadership in Higher Education.
